What are qualified commuter benefit plans?
A qualified commuter benefit plan is an employee tax-savings program governed by Section 132 of the IRS Tax Code. Employees can choose to reduce their taxable income by an amount equal to their anticipated commuting expenses (for example, parking fees, transit passes, shuttle services, bus fares) up to the statutory monthly limits. Reimbursement for the cost of commuting is provided directly to the employee.
Why offer a commuter benefit plan?
As with other IRS programs, a commuter benefit plan allows your employees to reduce taxable income on commuting expenses they’re already paying. Depending on the employee’s tax bracket, savings of up to 40% are possible for commuting expenses. Additionally, payroll tax savings for the employer can reach 10%, which is more than enough to cover the cost of administering the program.
